聖道慈惠姊妹會(Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word)1869年到聖安東尼奧(San Antonio)設分會負有神聖的使命，聖道大學(University of the Incarnate Word)便是這個使命的眾多成果之一。1900年聖道研究所(Academy of the Incarnate Word)遷到在Alamo Heights的聖道慈惠姊妹會的垂死之家(Motherhouse)。
1909年將大學部課程加入教學的課程之中，並改名為College and Academy of the Incarnate Word。聖道大學為德州規模最大的天主教學校。該校帶給八千四百名學生的是優秀的學術研究以及眾多的校園和社區活動。
該校有四十多種大學和二十四種研究所學位，包括商學、資訊系統、電腦服務、設計以及商品銷售等。
